Fender 600 Champion - A Guitar Amp You Shouldn't Be Without
by Chimezirim Odimba
There are many vintage gear enthusiasts among musicians. Folks who like the look, sound and simplicity of the gear of yesteryear. They're commonly a little less interested in performance, and a little more interested in nostalgia.
Guitarists of this inclination will want to take a look at Fender's retro offerings. Safe to assume they're already sporting a '72 telecaster or something of the like. Now the question becomes what type of amp is worthy to pair that guitar with?
If you're the kind who finds the time occasionally to sit down and strain out a few chords, take a look at the Fender Champion 600 amp. It's a fun and price-friendly tribute to a rare and historic Fender amp. With a mere 5 watts available from its tube amp circuitry and a 6" speaker, it's not going to compete with a rhythm section. However, if you're more likely to be slowboating along with a friend or playing along with the blues, this amp is for you. The Fender 600 glows with retro charm as well, sporting the same "two-tone" fully-upholstered look as the first Fender amps of the '50s.
The folks at Fender wouldn't dare mess with the visage, but they couldn't help but upgrade the guts of this beauty. They've added a higher-gain preamp that urges the overdriven tone to exceed that of the original model. A choice of high- or low-gain inputs has been installed as well. An internal speaker jack enables the connection of a larger cab - perfect for rare instances when your Champion 600 leaves home for open-stage night. At 7 kg in weight and a compact 11 x 12 x 7.5" that's going to be no sweat.
The leather strap handle and red-jeweled pilot light add additional retro appeal. If playing classic gear is your thing, consider a Fender Champion 600 vintage amplifier.
