Dean Karnazes' 50-50 - A Review
by Dr. Mahoney
Have you heard of Dean Karnazes?
Dean is an ultramarathoner.
And he made me cry.
No, not from training.
And no, not right away.
But eventually, and repeatedly.
More on that in a bit.
I got to hear Dean speak at the expo for the Big Sur International Marathon.
And I got to shake Dean's hand and get his autograph of his book 50/50.
"Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days -- and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!" almost says it all as the subtitle of 50/50.
What is missing from the subtitle is the fact that Dean ran these 50 marathons in 50 different states across the USA.
So "50/50/50" could have been the title of Dean's book, too.
Some of these marathons were the real events -- such as Chicago, Marine Corps, and New York City.
Others were recreated with lots of help from local organizers and with a few or many other runners joining Dean for that day's marathon.
There are many lessons about endurance in this jam-packed book:
running a marathon a day for 50 days; traveling to 50 states in 50 days; logistics for 50 events in 50 days. The book also has lots of tips for endurance runners, and many of them will help endurance walkers, too.
What I like best about this book is something that I often strive to improve in my own writing: TELLING GOOD STORIES.
This explains how Dean made me cry -- repeatedly.
For example, Dean tells the story of a Japanese man named Kazuhiko Sakashita, who, one day after his own marriage -- more like an elopement -- to his Japanese bride on a beach in Maui, Hawaii, joined Dean and seven other runners to run a recreation of the Maui Marathon.
I will not spoil the story by trying to tell an abbreviated version here, but I will tell you that it is a tear-jerker.
And 50/50 tells many more touching stories that made me cry.
The personality of 50/50 matches the personality that I saw Dean express on stage and when he signed his book for me -- passionate about running, and compassionate for others.
In other words, Dean is the real deal, and 50/50 is a book for you to read:
to expand your mind about endurance; to remind you why you run or walk; to remind you to be kind to others. So read 50/50 for mind expansion, for inspiration, and for stories about the human condition and how we are all connected to one another.
I highly recommend it.
