Can We Really Pursue Happiness?

by Michelle Cole

This popular phrase is written in the United States Declaration of Independence. However, can we really pursue happiness?

Happiness is an emotion that fills our hearts with joy and contentment. A surprising number of people think that being rich equates to happiness. If that were true, all rich people would be very happy. We need only to look at Hollywood to know that this is not true. Happiness is not anything that can be bought. Happiness is priceless; it's also free. It is also a present state. Happiness is not something reserved for the future. I know some rich people who are unhappy. I know some poor people who are very happy.

True happiness is found from within each individual. It is not based on bank accounts, material things, or external forces. Nor can it be destroyed by external forces. This is why so many people remain unhappy. They are chasing something that can only be found from within. Happiness is not based on our circumstances. Happiness is something we are!

When we go home for the holidays, what brings us joy is seeing our loved ones. Spending time with the people we love. The joy that we feel, does not come from whether or not the loved ones that we are visiting, live in a mansion, or a one bedroom home. Or, if there are fancy cars parked in the driveway. The people we love fill our hearts with joy! It has nothing to do with material possessions.

Keeping Up With the Joneses

So many people are unhappy trying to impress, or outdo, someone else. Some people are in debt for that very reason. There is only one you. Never wish to be anyone else. Never want what someone else has. Whether it be material things, money, looks... Be you. Do you! Always be the best, you, that you can be. Never strive to become anyone else. Originals are better than copies!

Is It Wrong to Have Money?

There is nothing wrong with wanting, or having, a beautiful home, or a fancy car. However, when we think that material wealth equals happiness, that's where things go wrong. Having money is fine, as long as it doesn't have you!

How Can We Be Happy?

We must first have God in our lives. It is not possible to be happy, or to have peace, without Him! God also gives us guidance and strength to go through life's many trials. He also provides a joy that no one, or nothing, can take away. God will help us build a strong inner-self that no trial, or tribulation, can ruin. He will also help us live a life built on faith, not fear. Being alive is a huge blessing in itself. Life should bring each of us a great sense of joy! We should learn to count our blessings. We have many. As Paul so wisely stated, "Not that I speak in respect to want: for I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." ~(Philippians 4:11)

Happiness is not a life that is problem-free. We will always have problems. However, with faith in God and a strong inner-self, we will be able to face our problems and not allow problems, or trials, to defeat us.

Happiness is not about getting. It's about having. Having appreciation for what you do have! Counting your blessings, not your cash!
